French Bulldog Coats

Coats are becoming the new genes to chase when it comes to DNA in French Bulldogs. The coat genes associated with the French Bulldog breed but not limited to are:

Fluffy- L1 or L4

Curls- C1 or C2

Furnishings Wirehair- Fn

Shedding- SD

Please scroll to the bottom of the page for a detailed description on each these individual genes.

The combination of the genes listed above can create all of the coats existing in the dog species. Yes, there are other variants of these genes but for educational purposes we are only speaking on the genes associated with the French Bulldog breed at this current time. Many coats are still in the works and have not been created yet.

Below are some examples of different coat types and combinations.

Standard French Bulldog Coat

Our Stud Stump Shown Above

Stump is an example of a dog with:

No copies of fluffy

No copies of curls

No copies of furnishings

No copies of shedding

Stump's coat is going to look and feel much like most standard French Bulldogs that have been around since the breed was created. Short coat all around.

Fluffy Carrier French Bulldog

Our Stud Papa Smurf Shown Above

Papa Smurf is an example of a dog with:

1 copy of L1 fluffy

No copies of curls

No copies of furnishings

No copies of shedding

Smurf has a slighter longer coat than Stump. Although sometimes the single copy of fluffy is not visually noticeable, that is not the case with Smurf. When he passes on the L1 gene to his puppies, it is typically visually apparent.

Visual Fluffy L1L1

Our Stud Charmin

Charmin is an example of a dog with:

2 copies fluffy L1L1

No copies of curls

No copies of furnishings gene

No copies of shedding gene

Charmin is a perfect example of the coat type that made the entire dog breeding industry explode about 5 years ago when fluffy French Bulldogs became popular. He is an example of a Long-Haired French Bulldog or Fluffy as we call them now.

Big Rope Puffy C2 French Bulldog

Produced by our partners EFC

The "Puffy" French Bulldog above has:

2 copies fluffy L1L4

1 copy curls C2

No copies furnishings gene

No copies shedding gene

Above is a coat type many have never seen before. He is a visual fluffy (two copies fluffy) with one copy of curls (C2). He also has that big rope which adds to his rarity. The C2 gives much more of a tighter curl than the C1 gene. We own a female with C2 and her fur is more frizzy than standard coated French Bulldogs.

Fluffy Curly C1C1

Pictured is Kid Buu's dam Bonbon

Bonbon's full coat dna is:

2 copies fluffy L1L1

2 copies curls C1C1

No copies of furnishings gene

No copies shedding gene

Bonbon is a female that changed the French Bulldog coat market. Most French Bulldogs on the market today with a copy of C1 curls have Bonbon somewhere in their pedigree. By having two copies of the C1 gene and two copies of fluffy Bonbon passed a copy of each gene to every puppy she produced.

Wire-Haired French Bulldog

Our Very Own Wire-Haired girl Ms. Frizzle

Ms. Frizzle's full coat DNA is:

1 copy fluffy L1

No copy curls

1 copy furnishings gene

No copies shedding gene

The wire-haired gene is the newest gene introduced to the French Bulldog breed. The coat on this dog is longer than a standard fluffy L1L4 Frenchie. The hair continues to grow. It also makes the dog more hypoallergenic than any other Frenchies you will come across.

King Ted is another example of a Frenchie with the rare furnishings gene. He will pass 1 copy of fluffy to every puppy and any puppy he throws the wire-hair to will automatically have at least Frizzle's coat.
